Is Apple's App Store a cellular data hog? (We're getting very tired with articles like this)
Is Apple's App Store a cellular data hog? It's no secret to iPhone and iPad users that watching movies and listening to streaming audio consumes the bulk of their wireless data plans, but what may surprise them is how much data they eat up looking for and downloading apps from Apple's iTunes App while on the go.
Onavo compiled a report of the apps that consume the most data on iOS devices.
(Credit: Onavo)A recent report from Onavo, which has developed an app for tracking data usage on iOS devices, indicates that simply looking for and downloading apps from Apple's iOS App Store can chew up about 13 percent of all data consumed in a monthly data plan.
The company analyzed 8 terabytes of data it has gathered anonymously from iPhone and iPad users who have downloaded its app. While it comes as little surprise that the No. 1 data hog on the iPhone and iPad is streaming data and audio, usage of Apple's iOS App Store came in third place right behind Web browsing.
According to the report, the App Store accounts for more than 13 percent of all iPhone data usage in the U.S. each month. Three quarters of that data comes from downloads, while 24 percent is attributed to searches within the App Store.
Watching movies and listening to streaming music services, such as Pandora, accounted for about 35.3 percent of data consumed. And Web surfing ate up about 17.1 percent of usage.
Another surprising tidbit is that Facebook, which many people might assume consumes a good chunk of a monthly data plan, wasn't even in the top five apps that consumed data. After video and audio streaming, Web surfing, and Apple's iOS App Store, Google Maps consumed 8.3 percent of data, while e-mail consumed about 4.0 percent of total data. Facebook ate up only 2.8 percent of the total data for the month.
Onavo's report is interesting because it sheds some light on how real wireless subscribers are using their data plans. Understanding which applications are used most often and consume the most data is very important for consumers as wireless operators eliminate unlimited plans in lieu of usage-based data plans.
"Most people are blissfully unaware the App Store is hoovering up their data plan," Guy Rosen, co-founder and CEO of Onavo said in a statement. "iPhone users should be much more careful when downloading their Angry Birds--it's something best done at home, within the safety of Wi-Fi."
An Apple spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Onavo's report.
AT&T, which had the exclusive contract to sell the iPhone in the U.S. until February this year, was the first major wireless operator in the U.S. to move to a tiered offering for its smartphone customers. Verizon Wireless, which began selling the iPhone in February, discontinued its unlimited data service for new smartphone subscribers in July.
T-Mobile USA still offers an "unlimited" data plan, but it has begun limiting how much data its subscribers can use by slowing down service after customers hit a monthly usage threshold. AT&T has adopted this same plan for smartphone subscribers grandfathered into its unlimited data plan. And as Sprint is rumored to be getting the iPhone 5 when it's launched next month, there are some who speculate the carrier may ditch its unlimited data plan to ensure it can handle the anticipated traffic load associated with the iPhone.
Wireless operators that have put these data caps in place say that only a small percentage of their users actually exceed the defined limits. And data from companies, such as Validas, which tracks smartphone subscribers' data usage, backs up these assertions. In fact, most wireless subscribers are over-paying for data. And wireless operators say usage-based data plans are necessary to ensure that a small minority of customers don't consume more than their fair share of resources.
But one thing is clear, usage is increasing. Validas issued a report this summer that said Verizon Wireless customers have increased their usage by 150 percent over the past year. AT&T subscribers have increased usage by about 116 percent. What may be unclear and confusing to smartphone wireless subscribers, however, is what applications are actually eating up that data. Onavo executives say that is a key question that they can help consumers answer.
"Data addiction has taken hold across America, with U.S. smartphone users spending $55 billion a year," Rosen said. "Our monthly reports shine a light on where this money is going, so people can make informed choices about their data usage and save money."
Onavo has developed apps for the iOS devices as well as for the Google Android operating system. Primarily, these apps track and record how much data individual users are consuming. And they provide subscribers with the data in easy to read formats. The iPhone app also compresses certain types of data to help wireless subscribers conserve their data plans.
The app is available for iOS and Google Android devices. But the iPhone and iPad apps, which were developed before the Android app, also compress certain data to help subscribers' conserve bandwidth.
Based on the data from its first report, which included only usage from iOS users, Onavo came up with five tips to help consumers cut their mobile data bills.
Tip 1: Don't shop on the go
The App Store is one of the major drivers of mobile data--download your songs and apps at home over Wi-Fi, which is not counted in your monthly data usage plan. And Onavo experts say you save as much as 10 percent of your data.Tip 2: Switch e-mail to manual
When e-mail is set to "push" your device is constantly checking for new e-mails and downloading them automatically. Change your settings to "manual" and get e-mails only when you want them.Tip 3: Use mobile Web sites
Many Web sites have a mobile version which use much less data. Instead of www. try typing m. before the address instead.Tip 4: Compress your data
Download a free app, such as Onavo, which can compress your data. The company claims it can save users as much as 80 percent of your data usage. You could also download and use a different browser, such as Opera Mini browser which automatically compresses Web pages.Tip 5: Stream and download movies only when in Wi-Fi The biggest data hog is streaming videos. So instead of watching a movie over a 3G or 4G wireless network, make sure you're in a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Microsoft announced a deal with Jinni which is basically a search engine for movies and television shows. Jinni uses its movie genome (similar to how Pandora uses its music genome) which consists of taste-and-mood based discovery to allow for a more personal and intimate video search experience. Mood based discovery allows you to search or browse content based on categories like mood, plot and style. A search for betrayal on Jinni resulted in recommendations such as The Tudors, Troy and Kill Bill 2. Mood searching for a suspenseful flick produced recommendations for shows like Band of Brothers and movies like The Departed and Pan’s Labyrinth. Taste based recommendations are selected based on the characteristics of the content you watch.
What’s most intriguing with this partnership is that Microsoft is very quiet on the details or how exactly they’ll use this newly licensed technology. But after the windows 8 preview shown at the build conference a case can be made on what Microsoft products Jinni’s technology may see an appearance on. Xbox Live will be coming to Windows 8 simply as Xbox Live On Windows. Live along with Media Center, which was sold separately will all be integrated into Windows 8. Using the licensed Jinni technology one could envision the software running in unison with Live and Windows 8’s media service to share, recommend to others and find other content based on their tastes and mood within those services.
When one thinks of online movie stores immediately Apple’s iTunes and Amazon’s video on demand service comes time mind. With the latest report from IHS Screen Digest, (a media research firm) the partnership between Jinni and Microsoft makes a lot more sense. The report confirms that yes, when it comes to online movie stores iTunes and Amazon are immediately thought of but surprisingly so is Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace. While Apple’s iTunes dominates with 64.9% market share the Zune Marketplace stands in second place with 16.2 percent and Walmart’s VUDU edges out Amazon with 5.3 percent to round out the top three.
Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace is heavily tied to the success of Windows Phone 7 and with Windows 8 seemingly going for the one OS to rule them all approach the technology could be leveraged on all of Microsoft’s platforms to create quite the standard. The benefit of adding a unique movie discovery service to the Xbox Live Marketplace as well as their Zune Marketplace where users have the ability to search, download, stream, share and recommend movies and TV shows could be promising. With Windows 8 Microsoft could provide a streamlined service that would directly rival Apple and iTunes starting at the tablet, continuing to the laptop/desktop market and unrivaled in the video game console market.

Windows 8 arrives in time to take on the iPad 3 even as previous iPad tablet competitors circle the bowl. In terms of user headcount, Microsoft easily won the personal computer wars with Windows 1 through 7 but lost the MP3 wars as its Zune failed to make headway against the iPod. Now that its Windows Phone 7 is being kicked around by iPhone and Android, Microsoft is taking one more swing at finding the kind of mobile success it’s long enjoyed on the PC side. And it’s doing so by essentially placing Windows on a touchscreen. WP7 was “Windows†largely in name only, with the interface taking on a life of its own (the handful of WP7 users mostly rave about it, but the “handful†part paints it as a mainstream failure). With MS watching tablets gradually eroding personal computer sales, it’s looking to kill two birds with one stone. However, in this midst of eroding relevance, Microsoft is almost literally taking its desktop OS, dicing it up, and throwing it into a touchscreen salad, abandoning its efforts to build an OS with WP7 which tried to make sense for touchscreens from the ground up…
Microsoft’s problem is other than the highly popular Xbox, the company hasn’t successfully entered a new market in over a decade. The Zune was a flop of embarrassing proportions, being mostly an iPod knockoff which arrived years late (in brown, no less) and didn’t offer anything which anyone cared about. MS had been expecting to be able to capitalize on Xbox success with the Zune, even designating songs in the Zune music store with the same faux-currency used by Xbox gamers. It didn’t work. Meanwhile Apple largely owns the tablet market, with the iPad 2 single handedly outselling all competing tablets combined. The multitude of Android tablets fight each other for the same minority marketshare. The HP TouchPad has been canceled. The BlackBerry PlayBook is about to be. Microsoft’s move, then, turns out to be an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Windows. It’s an odd gambit…
Then again, Windows is in an odd position. Most of its users don’t appear to care much for it, considering it simply be the de facto operating system which all non-Apple computers happen to come with. And yet Windows has for decades had significant majority marketshare among personal computers. That’s been eroding for years amid Apple’s mainstream Mac resurgence, while hardcore geeks have largely come to favor Linux. But still, most computers in most houses are still running some flavor of Windows. Within a couple years, the new Windows 8 will be the most popular personal computer operating system in terms of user headcount. And Microsoft thinks it can spin that headcount popularity into tablet success, even despite the lack of Windows mindshare…
On the surface, it’s difficult to see where Windows 8 tablets will find their audience. Apple and its iPad 3 will continue to collect nearly all mainstream tablet purchases which haven’t been unduly influenced by geeks. Android will claim tablet sales to geeks along with those members of the mainstream whom the geeks can steer toward their own Android preference. The failures of the TouchPad and PlayBook seem to make clear that the tablet market is a two-horse race with little room for a third wheel. And yet Microsoft thinks it can carve out its own tablet space. Whom Microsoft thinks it’s going to take that marketshare away from is another story. Typically, Apple users tend to stick with Apple products for the long term amid overwhelmingly high user satisfaction marks. In other words, most of those using an iPad 2 now will end up on an iPad 3 later. And the geeks (along with those in the mainstream whose purchases they influence) long ago decided that they’d rather be in bed with Google than Microsoft given the choice, which for them means Android over Windows 8 Mobile. But with overall personal computer usage and sales giving way to tablet share, MS doesn’t have a choice but to try to leverage what Windows clout it has left into the tablet market. By next year, when Windows 8 tablets are up against the iPad 3, we’ll find out whether Microsoft has anything left in the tank or whether Windows 8 tablets are in fact the next lifeless Zune.
